From 'The Voice Kids' in Portugal to the stage at Junior Eurovision here in Yerevan, Nicolas Alves’s unique vocal quality and style has brought him far already.

Nicolas is a rock-loving thirteen year old who lists Queen, Michael Jackson, and Elvis among his favorite musical artists of all time, and auditioned for The Voice this year with Måneskin’s version of Beggin’. His song, Anos 70, is about feeling a bit like a fish out of water, but learning how to embrace the qualities that make you unique.

Nicolas, who was born in the United Kingdom to a Brazilian family and moved to a town near Lisbon at the age of ten, is really quite moved by the love and support he’s felt from his new homeland, especially now that he’s the proud flag-bearer for Portugal this year.

'When I arrived in Portugal in 2019, I couldn’t even imagine representing the country in such a huge competition like this, and it makes me so proud and so happy.’

His coach on The Voice Kids, who is also the co-author of the song, was renowned singer-songwriter Carolina Deslandes. (Keen Eurovision fans might recognize her as the runner-up of the 2021 Festival da Canção with her song Por um triz!) He feels very fortunate to have her as an advisor, mentor, and friend.

‘The best advice that I got from her is to just have fun and enjoy every single bit of it, because it’ll be over soon! Enjoy yourself, have a good time with the other contestants, and just have a great time!’

With such a one-of-a-kind sound, blending a rasp with an ability to hit falsetto, Nicolas has to be sure to keep his voice in top shape. He credits his mom with keeping him on track with caring for his instrument:

‘I have to mainly thank my Mom, because she’s always there. She reminds me to drink this, do that exercise, and do my vocal warmups every day. I drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, and when I sing, I just naturally sound like that!’

And listening to Nicolas singing Anos 70, we wouldn’t want it any other way! If you want to rock out with Portugal, be sure to vote for him!
