The songbird from Portugal: Victoria Nicole has high hopes
21 October 2024 at 08:00 CESTVictoria has already won a televised singing contest in 2024, and she’s hoping for another douze points. The Venezuela-born singer took home the trophy in The Voice Kids Portugal, with an incredible performance of Barbara Pravi’s Voilà, which Eurovision fans will remember from the 2021 Contest.
Her love of singing started with a holiday in Portugal where she listened to lots of ABBA, learnt to sing Chiquitita, then went on to join a singing academy — which might just be the most wholesome Junior Eurovision origin story ever.
As if her vocal skills weren’t enough, she’s also a beautiful pianist, plays the ukulele and does theatre performances. There certainly won’t be any boredom backstage in Madrid.
Victoria isn’t just performing Esperança (which means ‘hope’), she wrote it too. She was helped with the final version by Portuguese singer-songwriter Nininho Vaz Maia, who was Victoria’s coach at The Voice Kids, and Bárbara Tinoco, a Portuguese musician.
This young popstar is very close with two special family members — her dogs Susy and Copita. Susy is Copita’s daughter, and the pair are always fighting. But they’ll surely be united in their Junior Eurovision vote.
You’ll often find Victoria listening to 7 rings, Break Free and thank u, next because Ariana Grande is her favourite popstar. But she has just enough space in her heart for Olivia Rodrigo and Adele too.
Ariana, Olivia and Adele put a lot of emotion into their songs, and so does Victoria, whether she’s singing Eurovision legend Céline Dion’s My Heart Will Go On or Pablo Alborán’s Only You.
The fact that Victoria can perform her own composition on the Junior Eurovision stage means that Esperança is now her favourite song. Move over Ari.
Victoria will turn 14 just before the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024, and once the show is over she wants to carry on along the popstar path. She hopes to become a professional singer, performing in concerts and both writing and singing her own songs. But she has more than just a little Esperança, she’s got star quality and determination.
Telling her Instagram followers about what music means to her, Victoria said: “I want to share the love for music because music is important. Not for ourselves but for everybody in the world — it unites us.”
