UNICEF, Junior 2010 work together for kids

Millions of viewers across the continent will tune in to watch the show that unites children and their families in Europe, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, on the 20th of November.  The spirit of the event – positive and friendly – creates an ideal fit between the Junior Eurovision Song Contest and UNICEF, getting together children from wide range of backgrounds to meet and interact socially, to share their views and opportunities. This year, the attention is on children with special needs. 

"These children need care, attention and protection from everyone around. They are the most vulnerable and by joint efforts of the society, governments and people, we can make the world fit for them, improve their opportunities for a healthy life, education and well-being." Yuri Oksamitniy, UNICEF representative in Belarus said. 

To raise awareness on this important issue among the viewers and to give them the opportunity to give their helping hand, UNICEF will provide highlights on children’s rights in the framework of the 2010 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. 

Over 20 years ago, in order to protect and promote the rights of children – every human being below the age 18 – the world leaders decided to develop a special convention for children. And so, this day in 1989, the Convention on the Right of the Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Since then, almost all the countries in the world have ratified the document.
